Scoop and Scales is an environmental cooperative that opened its refill shop in Macclesfield in October 2020. Scoop and Scales offers over 300 products and provides convenient delivery services by electric cargo bike.
Brief
I took over as the Scoop and Scales Fresh Produce Manager in April 2025. We had a small subscription list of about 6-8 people on weekly Organic Fruit and Veg Box Deliveries. In addition, we'd get 1 or 2 more orders a week through the existing website. Unfortunately that website didn't take online payments so customers were invoiced for good and boxes at a later date. Email communications were scarce and the email list of 150 subscribers unused.
The Problem
Apart from the clunky nature of our ordering process, the site had no SEO and no real time information on the contents of the boxes. We were also unable to upsell products. The veg boxes also lost money, the time it took to manage the subscribers list and email customers meant any profit from the box scheme was absorbed by staff costs. No one even knew we did local organic fruit and veg boxes.
Our Solution
The Scoop & scales main e-commerce site - also outdated and not payment enabled - was awaiting a new till system. So as PepperStreet I decided to revamp the old information site, e-commerce enable the site and add in the Fruit & Veg boxes so people could now order online and pay. In addition to this they could add eggs to their order and other seasonal add on products. The delivery was postcode enabled to limit our delivery area to an appropriate area. The site had some basic SEO put in place and finally we resurrected MailChimp to start sending out weekly emails to our fruit and veg customers asking them to support Scoop and order online.
The Outcome
- We have seen a 220% increase in orders within 3 weeks of launching the new site.
- Orders have tripled
- We have a 70% opening rate and a 11% Click through rate on our emails. (a 20% open rate and 5% CTR is considered high performing)
Conclusion
Scoop and Scales is a community project, so PepperStreet contributed to this website pro bono as part of our social responsibility initiative. While the work wasn’t particularly complex or costly, the immediate benefits to the business are clear.
Let’s build the right website for your business.
