A guide to making your WordPress website WCAG compliant

A guide to making your WordPress website WCAG compliant

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility. By following these guidelines, you can ensure your website is usable by people with disabilities, including those with visual, auditory, cognitive, and motor impairments.

WCAG have 4 main principles:

  1. Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in a way they can perceive.
  2. Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable.
  3. Understandable: Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable.
  4. Robust: Content must be robust enough to be interpreted by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.

Most businesses should strive to make their websites accessible to everyone, both legally and morally. Doing so can increase potential customers and improve brand reputation.

10 Top Tips to get your site more accessible

  1. Choose an Accessible Theme and Plugins:
  2. Install an accessibilty plugin like OneClick Accessibility https://wpaccessibility.io/
  3. Select fonts and colors for legibility: Make sure you have adequate colour contrast especially between background and text
  4. Always make sure you have descriptive ALT text for images and this can also boost SEO (bonus)
  5. Provide captions for all videos and audio content.
  6. Use semantic HTML. Structure your pages and posts with appropriate headings (H1, H2, H3, p, quote.) to structure your content.
  7. Skip to main content link: Provide a keyboard-accessible link above the page header that goes to the main content section.
  8. Clearly describe your links: Use descriptive link text that clearly indicates the destination. Don’t just use “click here”
  9. Use focus indicators. Underline links in content. Do not rely on colour alone.
  10. Make sure your design is responsive to diferent screen sizes and optimised for touchscreen functionality
